As President Donald Trump receives criticism for how he has handled the coronavirus pandemic, his backers have taken to social media to show their support.

One topic that comes up is that Trump works for no money and donates the entirety of his presidential salary.

A Facebook post from May that has amassed over 100,000 shares reads: "I want to thank Donald Trump for working like a dog for no money to save a country that doesn't appreciate his sacrifice! Thank you Mr. President!"

Posts of that nature contain a degree of truth, but are misleading.

Trump, as promised during his campaign, does write checks to various agencies equivalent to a quarter of his annual salary every quarter. But this does not mean he earns no money.

This notion is misleading because Trump continues to profit off of real estate he owns or manages, despite lawsuits arguing that this violates the Constitution's emoluments clauses.

Trump has donated his presidential salary

Trump is not the first president to donate his salary. Former Presidents John F. Kennedy and Herbert Hoover, both wealthy before they took office, donated all their earnings. Forbes reports Trump's net worth as of July 9 at
$2.1 billion, making him the first president to be a billionaire.

When Trump announced his decision to forgo a salary, critics expressed doubt because presidents are required to be compensated for their work. To get around this, Trump takes $1 each year from his paychecks.

According to news coverage and White House news releases, Trump has written checks equal to a quarter of his $400,000 annual salary every quarter to various government agencies:

The House Ways and Means Committee released six years of Trump's tax returns to the public on Dec. 30, 2022. The report includes more than 2,700 pages of individual returns from Trump and his wife and over 3,000 pages of
returns on Trump's business entities, as USA TODAY reported.

On Dec. 15, 2022, the Joint Committee on Taxation also released a report detailing Trump's tax returns.

Trump reported nearly $2 million in charitable donations in 2017 and a little over $500,000 in charitable donations in both 2018 and 2019, according to his tax returns and the report. He didn't report any charitable
contributions in 2020.

There is no way to know from Trump's tax returns whether the money he donated included his salary, as the post claims. The tax returns show only how much was donated and claimed in charitable contributions, Jeffrey
Hoopes, research director at the UNC Tax Center, told USA TODAY in an email.

"Since money is fungible, it is unknowable whether he donated his salary, or whether he donated any more than he otherwise would have had he not got the salary, etc," Hoopes said. "I would not support the claim that we could know
that from his tax returns."

Daniel Shaviro, a tax policy expert at New York University, agreed the returns don't indicate where the contributions went. Shaviro also told USA TODAY the returns don't confirm he made those contributions.

"He claimed sufficiently large charitable deductions in 2017-2019 ... but whether those deductions were actually made is not verified by the returns themselves," Shaviro said.

The Joint Committee on Taxation states in its report that it has inquired into whether Trump's cash contributions are "supported by required substantiation."

Liz Harrington, Trump's spokesperson, did not respond to USA TODAY's request for comment.

Trump did donate his salary

The Trump administration announced the donation of portions of Trump's salary to federal agencies such as the Department of Health and Human Services, the National Park Service and the Small Business Administration,
according to White House briefings.

These agencies confirmed to USA TODAY that Trump donated part of his annual presidential salary of $400,000.

Cynthia Hernandez, a spokesperson for the National Park Service, referred USA TODAY to a 2017 press release that states Trump donated over $78,000 from his salary to the agency to restore two projects at the Antietam National
Battlefield in Maryland.

Christina Carr, a spokesperson for the Small Business Administration, confirmed that the agency received Trump's 2018 second-quarter salary detailed in the White House press briefing.

Trump donated $100,000 of his salary to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, in 2017, Kamara Jones, the department's acting assistant secretary for
public affairs, told USA TODAY in an email.

Aaron Craig Gleason, an anti-LGBTQ+ writer who has accused queer people of “grooming” children for sexual abuse, has been arrested and charged for molesting a child under the age of 12.

Gleason, a 39-year-old middle school teacher and soccer coach who has written for the anti-LGBTQ+ media outlets The Daily Wire, The Federalist, and The Imaginative Conservative, was arrested on January 28 by police officers in Okaloosa, Florida. He has been charged with the “lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under the age of 12 by a person over the age of 18” and was held in jail on a $75,000 bond.

Parent wanting a lesbian book banned gets arrested for Child Molestation


A Missouri man who advocated for the banning of books from schools that contained sexual material has been arrested for child molestation.

According to local news station KMBC, Ryan Utterback, a 29-year-old parent in the North Kansas City School District, has been accused of inappropriately touching a child under 12-years old in December 2020.

And in September 2020, he allegedly stuck his finger through a hole in a teenager’s pants and began rubbing their leg. The pre-teen told investigators they “didn’t like it at all” and that it felt uncomfortable.


A separate case also accuses Utterback of showing sexual videos to a four-year-old.

He has been charged with second-degree child molestation, as well as furnishing or attempting to furnish pornographic material to a minor.

Yet Utterback recently participated in multiple school board meetings in which he advocated for the banning of certain books, including Alison Bechdel’s bestselling LGBTQ graphic memoir, Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, on the grounds that they contain sexual material.

At a school board meeting on October 26, 2021, Utterback can be seen on video holding poster boards containing content from the book while the Northland Parent Association President James Richmond spoke out against it.

In November, students protested the banning of books from their school, to which Utterback responded, “I understand their struggles and it’s not lost on me. But again those conversations are to be had at home, Only I have their intimate understanding as to what is and isn’t appreciated for my children.”

Utterback will reportedly appear back in court on March 10.
