The only reasons for preferring an STI I think would be the sweet sound of the boxer engine, and that Subaru is more seasoned at producing an AWD car than Ford. Otherwise, the RS should have better performance.

dont the new Sti's have like 330 hp or something like that?

I just remember reading that the, RS will have more HP than the STI and the Golf R.

Most definitely. It's the only interesting car in Ford's lineup. (The GT doesn't count, since it's a supercar.)

Who cares if it would look funny hopping out of this in a suit? The RS is awesome. I used to hop out of my WRX wearing a suit. I enjoyed every minute of it!

If you still live in the northeast, you'll appreciate the rally car nature in winter. Trust me.

I'm convinced! I've already laid the groundwork with the wife to convince her that it'd be a practical choice (it really is). I just flat out love rally cars. There's something so appealing about a 4 cylinder with a massive turbo, all wheel drive, and reasonable ground clearance. I always make a point of traveling up to maine for the new englad Forrest rally. When you lived in Wisconsin did you ever get a chance to watch that leg of the rally America series?

I do love the thrum of a boxer engine. The Ford should pretty soundly outperform an STI, but though the all wheel drive system is one of its advantages, it's also the one thing that concerns me. It's a terrible complex mechanism, and I worry it won't be bullet proof like the Subaru. It's just such an amazing car that I'm willing to deal with whatever mechanical issues might surface.

I think the new STI is 305 up with somewhere around 280 lb/ft of torque. The RS is claiming 342 HP and 324 lb/ft of torque. It also has a very advanced all wheel drive system with torque vectoring. In a straight run or around a track the Ford should give the Subaru the beans.

There's something about a rally car that just inspires confidence. Whether it is rain or snow, it's like the car is telling you "it's cool man, I got this." I miss the Subi when I have to drive in heavy rain. My little RWD creampuff likes to loose traction in the wet. Granted, when the top is down, there's nothing like it, and that's why I went with that over another WRX, but if I lived in a northern climate, I would own an AWD car, no question about it.

I never got to check out the rally race, but that would have been cool.

It's not like Ford doesn't know how to do a rally car, or AWD... they've just never really done it in America. It's always been on the other side of the pond.

What I find funny is that people dismiss it by saying "it's just a Focus", but yet nobody says that the WRX or STi are just Imprezzas. Nobody says that the Evo is just a Lancer.

That's certainly true. The concern I have is in how advanced the AWD system is. Each wheel (maybe it's just the rear wheels) has its own independent cluch, giving the car torque vectoring capability. Power delivery is manually controllable, sending as much as 70 per-cent of the power to the rear wheels. It's a fascinating system, and I think that's where the STI has got an edge: it's proven and reliable. I've just wanted an RS since taking the mantle from cosworth, and I do have soft spot for ford.

So wait and buy one in the 2nd or 3rd year, after they've worked the kinks out.

To be fair I'm not certain people know the racing pedigree Ford has, which has traditionally been earned in Europe (the RS is made in Germany as it has been for years) in all variety of mototsports. Sure, the GT40 was built to be a Ferrari killer (and succeeded) and has earned its place in the annals of mototsport, but they really earned their reputation as a maker of small, fast cars often rally inspired. I have always been struck how ford is the lone non-European automaker that's well represented on my trips to Europe. The subi and Evo are fantastic cars, but they don't have the same pedigree as Ford.

That's probably what I'll do. I live amongst the Big Spenders of affluent connecticut but I'll forever be a cheap Midwesterner at heart.
