See Stanford 2015 vs Ohio State 2015. Stanford lost 16 to 6 to NW and then lost to a pretty bad Oregon team near the end of the season and was ranked higher than that absolutely loaded Ohio State team with 1 loss, just because they only played 2 ranked teams and lost to 1 of them.

Joe Klatt has a belief that I agree with: non-conference winners don't belong.

However there is another belief that the national championship should be between the 2 best teams (or 4 best with playoffs), and in that scenario it's possible for one or two conferences to have the best two/four teams in the country. While I don't personally believe that (since regular season and conference championship games decide the "best" of any given conference), it is a very understandable belief.

IMO, in 2011 LSU and Alabama were the two best teams, but Alabama did not earn or deserve a rematch.

What so many people ignored about the BCS is that the FBS/I-A had a playoff: it was the regular season and every game counted. Rematches are dumb: a winner shouldn't have to beat the loser twice, nor should the winner deserve the earlier win be for naught because the loser won the rematch.
