Farrish: Rangers must become hunters in Game 3Sunday, 04.19.2015 / 2:03 PM
Dan Rosen  - NHL.com Senior Writer

For additional insight into the Eastern Conference First Round series between the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers, NHL.com has enlisted the help of Dave Farrish to break down the action. Farrish will be checking in throughout the series.

Farrish was an assistant coach for the Anaheim Ducks andToronto Maple Leafs from 2005-14. He won the Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2007. He also coached 1,027 games in the minor leagues, including the American Hockey League. In addition, Farrish, a former defenseman, played 430 games over seven seasons in the NHL.

Former NHL assistant coach Dave Farrish noticed shortly after the opening faceoff Saturday night at Madison Square Garden how much different the Pittsburgh Penguins' attack is when an effective Chris Kunitz is playing alongside Sidney Crosby instead of Daniel Winnik.

"They have good chemistry and they know where each other are," Farrish said. "Kunitz's speed and also with [Patric] Hornqvist's aggressiveness make them a really good match [with Crosby] and I thought they opened the game up. They were so aggressive and really persistent on the puck, and they created a lot of good scoring opportunities just through that."

Crosby scored twice and Kunitz had three points on a goal and two assists to help the Penguins defeat the New York Rangers 4-3 in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference First Round series.

The best-of-7 series is tied 1-1 with Game 3 set for Monday at Consol Energy Center (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA, ROOT, MSG).

"Obviously they have offensive abilities too," Farrish said. "Kunitz's pass to Crosby on his [second] goal, that might be the difference between him and Winnik, that offensive skillset. That was a big difference and obviously a huge part of the game."

In addition to the goals they provided, Farrish felt Kunitz, Crosby and Hornqvist were significant in the Penguins slowing down the typically speedy Rangers.

"That was obvious right from the get go in two areas for me," Farrish said. "On the forecheck, I thought they did a lot better job of puck placement and they were able to get pucks back, whereas in the first game I thought [Henrik] Lundqvist handled too many pucks and it was an easy out for them. I think also in the neutral zone regroups they were on top of the defensemen much better. They didn't give them the time to go D to D and then give them a chance to get their speed going up the ice to make those great passes. I thought that was a huge difference."

Farrish felt the Penguins were more aggressive in getting inside the Rangers. Both of Crosby's goals were a result of him beating a Rangers' player to the net.

"If you get inside position, you're the first guy on the puck, you're the first guy to the front of the net so they're always defending from the outside in rather than the inside out," Farrish said. "The Rangers have done a really good job of that with their defense, they've been really good at boxing people out from in front of their net, but I thought Pittsburgh did a great job of getting inside in a lot of situations and that caused a lot of problems for New York."

Now that this is shaping up to be a punch, counterpunch series, Farrish said in Game 3 the Rangers have to return to being the team that is hunting down pucks and being the aggressor. That's more their style and a big reason why they won the Presidents' Trophy with 113 points.

Farrish felt the Rangers were too passive in Game 2.

"They have to become the hunters again," Farrish said. "Last game, Pittsburgh became the hunters and the Rangers became the hunted and they were stuck back on their heels for a lot of the game. Pittsburgh was way more engaged in the game from a physical point of view and by going to the net hard, getting second chances, jamming. If the Rangers want to get back on top again they have to take over that attitude where they have to go back on the hunt again, be aggressive, go to the net harder, just create more traffic in front of the net."

That includes on their power play, which is 2-for-12 in the series, including 1-for-7 in Game 2. Normally two power-play goals in two playoff games would be a positive sign for a power play, but not when you've been gifted as many opportunities as the Rangers have by the Penguins through the first 120 minutes of the series.

"They never really got set up because Pittsburgh was really good on the penalty kill," Farrish said. "They were aggressive up ice, really aggressive. When New York did get set up there was some great chances there, but [Marc-Andre] Fleury was the difference."

The Rangers finally took advantage of a power-play opportunity early in the third period, when Derick Brassardconverted to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Rangers had seven shots on goal and 10 shot attempts on that power play. They had six shots on goal on their other six power plays.

Farrish said the key on that power play was puck movement and less time stuck on the perimeter, two issues that plagued them on their other six power plays.

"They went with four forwards on the power play and they moved the puck really well from side to side," Farrish said. "They got away from Pittsburgh's aggressiveness because they weren't so static. They were standing still more in the first couple periods, but in the third period if you look at the puck movement, they moved it around really well, found some seams and they really got Pittsburgh tired at the end as well because they were aggressive."

RANGERS at PENGUINS

TV: NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports, ROOT, MSG

Best-of-seven series tied, 1-1

The Pittsburgh Penguins return home for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference First Round on Monday and will try to build on the home-ice advantage they created for themselves by winning Game 2 against the New York Rangersat Madison Square Garden two nights earlier.

The Penguins, who will play three of the next five games at home if the best-of-7 series goes the distance, will have to do something they haven't done yet in the series to give themselves the best chance at taking a 2-1 lead: They have to do a better job of staying out of the penalty box.

Pittsburgh has given New York 12 power plays through two games on penalties that were mostly stick infractions. They've been penalized three times for slashing, two for high sticking, two for hooking and one for cross checking

The Rangers have capitalized on two of them, including defenseman Ryan McDonagh's winning goal in Game 1.

"[The referees] have indicated to both teams that if you're going to use the stick anywhere in the wrist area, the hand area, you're going to come down on a player's hands like that, you're going to be called," Penguins coach Mike Johnston said. "We have to be a lot better with our sticks. Two got up into the face of the Rangers' players."

The Penguins feel somewhat fortunate to be even in the series because they haven't been burned too often by their own penalties. The Rangers have a 12-5 advantage in power-play opportunities in the series, but the special-teams goals are 2-2.

Pittsburgh's two power-play goals were scored in Game 2 by the second unit. Brandon Sutterhad the first one and Chris Kunitz scored the second.

"Maybe they overlooked some factors or things we want to do," Kunitz said. "They're shots on net, they're rebounds, there are guys going around the net. They're [not] pretty passes or big games; it's just timely scoring, finding the rebounds."

The Rangers feel they need to increase their aggressiveness in Game 3. They felt they let the Penguins come at them far too often in Game 2.

"I think they probably had it consistently throughout the game," McDonagh said. "They were a lot quicker on their sticks, moving their feet on loose pucks. [It] translated to them having the puck more. You could see we spent some more time in our zone than we'd like to."

Rangers coach Alain Vigneault left open the possibility that there could be a change to the lineup when he met with reporters in Pittsburgh on Sunday. Forward James Sheppard and defenseman Chris Summers have been healthy scratches for the first two games.

"We're just in the process of evaluating that," Vigneault said.

Vigneault said defenseman Kevin Klein (broken left arm) is out for Game 3, but Klein did join the team on the trip to Pittsburgh. He will miss his 19th consecutive game.

Penguins defensemen Christian Ehrhoff(concussion) and Derrick Pouliot (upper body) remain day-to-day. Neither has played yet in the series, but they've been practicing with the team.

Re: tOfficial Round 1: NY Rangers v PIT Penguins thread

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins' lineup will most likely remain the same when they face the New York Rangers in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference First Round Series.

Defensemen Derrick Pouliot and Christian Ehrhoff, who are each recovering from upper-body injuries, will most likely miss a third game to start the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Pouliot was the first skater on the ice for Pittsburgh's Monday morning skate, but practiced alongside defenseman Scott Harrington on a fourth pairing.

Ehrhoff, who had practiced recently, did not participate in the skate and might not return in the near future.

"[Ehrhoff] just hasn't been progressing," Penguins coach Mike Johnston said. "That's the step that's been taken and it's because he's sort of flat-lined in his recovery and will be progressing from there."

With Ehrhoff and Pouliot, in addition to Kris Letang and Olli Maatta out, the Penguins' defense has become reliant on American Hockey League call-ups, including the pairing of Taylor Chorney and Brian Dumoulin. They expect the Rangers to continue to increase their physicality to try to exploit the thinning Pittsburgh blue line.

"It certainly wouldn't surprise me if that was a mindset going in, part of their game plan. And that's fine," defenseman Ian Cole said. "We've got some sturdy defenseman here, not afraid of contact, not going to shy away from it. If it needs to be done as far as taking a hit to make a play we'll certainly make sure we take that hit and get the puck out."

Johnston said Pittsburgh's lineup for Game 3 has not been finalized. Forward Scott Wilson could potentially replace Beau Bennett in the bottom six.

If the Penguins use the same lineup from its 4-3 Game 2 win to tie the series 1-1 and play more at even strength, they are confident it can produce a similar result Monday at Consol Energy Center (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA, MSG, ROOT).

"We feel we can outplay the Rangers, 5-on-5," defenseman Ben Lovejoy said. "They have a ton of talent, a ton of speed. We think we do too. I think that if we continue to take seven penalties, they're going to beat us. I don't know how their numbers are throughout the season with their power play, but it gives them so much momentum, it grinds us down.

"[The Rangers] may be [a better 5-on-5 team] in the regular season, but right now, we feel we're a very even team. We feel we can outplay them 5-on-5."

PENGUINS

Chris Kunitz – Sidney Crosby – Patric Hornqvist

Daniel Winnik – Evgeni Malkin – David Perron

Beau Bennett – Brandon Sutter – Steve Downie

Nick Spaling – Maxim Lapierre – Blake Comeau

Marc-Andre Fleury

Thomas Greiss

Scratched: Craig Adams, Scott Wilson, Scott Harrington

Injured: Kris Letang (concussion), Christian Ehrhoff (upper body), Derrick Pouliot (upper body), Pascal Dupuis (blood clot), Olli Maatta (upper body)

Status report: No update was provided on Letang. He last played March 28, when he sustained a concussion after playing 14:24 against the Arizona Coyotes.

Who's hot: Crosby ignited for two goals in Game 2 Saturday. He has scored 20 points and nine goals in his past 18 games dating back to March 9 … Kunitz broke out of a slump with three points and one goal Saturday. He had one point in his previous 19 games.

I feel like the Rangers kind of lost site of Crosby a lot in the game and they can't do that again. Even if he is a known playoff no show you can't let him get open looks at the net.
